Explore the fascinating world of canine genetics with our comprehensive 14-week course, designed for breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and dog enthusiasts.

The Syllabus

Lecture 1: “A Glimpse into Genetics: Why Does it Matter?”

As a start, you will gain an introduction to the fundamental concepts of genetics and evolution and their importance in the case of dogs.

Lecture 2: “The Basic Rules of Genetics: From Molecules to Mathematics”

Right after the introductory lecture, we will dive into the foundational principles of genetics, from the molecular structure of DNA to Mendelian inheritance – and the link between the two.

Lecture 3: “A Deeper Look into DNA”

In the third introductory lecture, we will take a deeper and closer look into the DNA itself, investigating the basic units of information, the genes.

Lecture 4: “How Genes Create Traits”

Genes are there. But how do they define the different traits? And actually, which traits are they connected to?

Lecture 5: “The Source of Variability: Mutations”

What are mutations, and why are they so important to understand? Lecture 5 will give you a thorough explanation!

Lecture 6: “Mendelian Inheritance and When It Cannot Be Applied”

It is vital to understand the rules of Mendelian inheritance and to learn when different rules apply.

Lecture 7: “Coat Colour Genetics: Typical Examples of Mendelian Inheritance – and Beyond”

Coat colour is one of the most easily and visually identifiable traits. Let’s use it as a great example, and explore the genetics behind!

Lecture 8: “Behaviour Genetics: When It Gets Complicated”

Behaviour is probably one of the most complex and complicated traits of any living species. It is time to get a glimpse into its genetic background!

Lecture 9: “How Genetic Variation Resulted in Breeds”

We have so many breeds with totally different appearances. Let’s understand the genetics behind the evolution of breeds!

Lecture 10: “Genetics in Breeding: ‘We are One’, Thinking in Populations”

It is one thing to understand the genetics of one individual dog. But what if we are talking about the breeding and reproduction of dogs? We start to unleash the topics of population genetics here!

Lecture 11: “Traps in Modern Breeding and Possible Solutions”

Let’s put population genetics in action and see how it applies to the challenges of our era!

Lecture 12: “Epigenetics”

Epigenetics is kind of a game changer. Can one dog pass on their gained knowledge or experiences to their offspring? This lecture will focus on the thrilling topic of epigenetics.

Lecture 13: “Microbiome”

This lecture of the course will take you to another fascinating scientific field, and you will discover how microbiome can affect canine health and behaviour. And, as a bonus, we won’t forget to mention another important part of the dog’s own genome: the mitochondrial genome.

Lecture 14: “Practical Information”

How can we implement our knowledge of dog genetics in real life? The final practical lecture will offer you some guidance.
